The East Baton Rouge Parish’s Capital Area Pathways Project had as one of its objectives to use marginal land, in this case a creek floodbank, to provide recreation, connectivity and enhanced lifestyle adjacent to a new heatlh district, stretching from a large, recreational park to a restidential and school zone.
The area periodically flooded and is a major drainway to this part of the City. The structures had to enhance drainage and withstand periodic inundation.
Forte and Tablada, Inc. (formerly PEC) was tasked with completing two segments:
- Pennington Trail Segment along Dawson Creek : a 1-mile, 12-ft. wide, concrete pathway along the northern boundary of Dawson Creek and connecting to Quail Drive and Kenilworth Parkway at BREC’s Perkins Road Park
- Dawson Creek Extension Phase I: a 12-ft concrete pathway following along the northeastern boundary of Dawson Creek and connecting the Pennington Trail Segment to just west of Siegen Lane to a location on South Mall Drive
Forte and Tablada completed preliminary engineering and final plans and specifications for this including miscellaneous drainage items and appurtenances. We assembled all available information on utilities, drainage, potential obstructions and the required survey information. We paid significant attention to existing drainage that would be impacted and any improvements that would be necessary to minimize the trails drainage impact on existing neighborhoods. The firm set the limits of construction, the recommended bike path grade at various terrain changes. The firm prepared typical sections and any recommended alignment changes. The project was designed to be ADA compliant.
